TV.de leads .de domain name pre-auction.
When .de registry DENIC starts releasing previously unavailable domain names tomorrow, you can bet a lot of Sedo’s partner registrars will be hammering the registry for TV.de.
A “pre-auction” for TV.de closed at 279,499 EUR, which is about $419,000 USD at today’s exchange rates.
The auction is still ongoing as I write this (thanks to Sedo’s web site failing under the bidding activity), but only one character .de domain names remain open for bidding. And, in what may be a lesson to other registries planning to release one character domain names, the one character domains aren’t selling for as much as many of the two character domains.
This morning I started tracking the top couple dozen domains in terms of current bid price. They’re below, with the first number in Euros and the second in US dollars. I suspect bidding would have gone even higher had the domains been guaranteed to the winner; but right now bidders are counting on Sedo to acquire the domains for them.

.De auction traffic halts auction.
Massive traffic for Sedo’s .de “pre-auction” has taken the site down. A message on the site reads:
Due to the extremely high participation in the .De Pre-Auction Sedo?s website was temporarily down. We have decided to extend the auction until 8:00 PM CET. If necessary we will extend the auction later than this time to accommodate additional bids.
Presumably that means 8:00 PM ET. Actually they mean Central European Time, but don’t be surprised if this is extended.
Bidding has been fast and furious all morning. When I checked around 10 am, Com.de was leading the pack at over $100,000. In addition to releasing one and two character .de domains, .de registry DENIC is also releasing domains that include other top level domains, such as com.de and net.de.
The last time I recall Sedo melting under traffic was during a .mobi auction in 2007. Sedo retooled after that and has avoided any meltdowns until today.
We’ll keep you posted.

Leave a comment about whether you’re going to TRAFFIC next week.
One of my readers asked me to post this in advance of next week’s TRAFFIC show in New York City, with a goal of having those people attending the conference get a head start on networking. So if you’re going to the show, leave a comment with your real name and company association (if any).
If you’re not going to the show, feel free to leave a comment as well about the next show you’ll be attending.
I personally won’t be attending next week’s show, and will hit the circuit again starting in January with DomainFEST. If I were heading to NYC next week, I think the most interesting panel looks like the ad quality panel at 1:45 on Tuesday.
It will also be interesting to see how the two auction houses perform. This will be the last Moniker live domain auction during a TRAFFIC show. Rick Latona Auctions, which also has an auction at the show next week, will be the exclusive auction house next year (and is organizing most of the TRAFFIC shows).
