Making Money With Domains

The Ultimate Domaining Resource

Archive for February, 2009

With just hours remaining, several good domain names have met their reserves.

Sedo ’s January Great Domains auction concludes at noon EST today. With just hours to go, several high quality domains have met their reserve prices and should go much higher in the final hours.

I’m surprised to see that Fired.com had such a low reserve. The domain has met the reserve and is at $10,100. The owner had been asking much more, but there’s still time for the domain to attract more bids. As you may recall, Fired.com was subject to a no-brainer UDRP last year, and the case won my “Domainer Dunce” award for 2008.

FindaDate.com, an active dating web site, is up to $13,166 with 11 bids. Myopia.com, which means “short sightedness”, has met its reserve at $4,999. I expect Adverbs.com to go much higher from its current $651, especially with 16 bids placed already.

A number of three character domains have met their reserves and are between $3,000-$5,000, including fqz.com, jgf.com, mrq.com, mwx.com, fzf.com, vzj.com, and vxx.com.

Gaps.com has scored 60 bids and is up to $9,800. Storming.com, at $460, should go up before the hammer goes down. And Starship.com, which got off to a bang thanks to having no reserve, has attracted a staggering 87 bids up to $5,300.

Forgive.com is gaining momentum at $5,800 and Cheetahs.com is running fast at $2,850.

A certain blogger should consider picking up Koz.net ($510) and Koz.com ($6,600), because people have a tough time spelling his nickname correctly.

  • Moniker customers will be able to list domains for sale on Snapnames from within their accounts.

Domain Name Wire has learned that Moniker and SnapNames will introduce a new feature next week that makes listing domains on SnapNames easier. The feature will allow customers to list domains on SnapNames from within their Moniker accounts.

This is a marked improvement over the current process, which requires filling out a lengthy spreadsheet. SnapNames is a good venue to sell domain names, particularly in the $50-$200 range. However, the spreadsheet listing process made the time/benefit equation a bit harder to swallow.

The ability to list domains directly from a Moniker account is the second major synergy between the two Oversee.net owned companies since they were acquired. Last year SnapNames allowed domains to be listed on its service that were registered at Moniker; prior to that the domains had to be transferred to a SnapNames registrar.

The move comes just in time to beat back competitor NameJet, which is currently allowing some customers to list their non-expired domains for sale on its platform. I’ve been told that this feature will open up to a wider audience in 2009.

SnapNames and NameJet may become more critical in 2009 as many domainers look to liquidate unwanted names. With their daily volume of customers hunting for expired domains, these services provide more liquidity than other domain name sales venues.

I suspect we’ll hear about this new feature at DOMAINfest next week.

  • 360.org Sells for $25,500

360.org domain was purchased for only $2,000 a year ago.

Sedo has completed the sale of 360.org for $25,500. The seller is likely to be familiar to people on DNForum, as active member “Acro” (Theo Develegas) flipped this domain for about a dozen times what he paid for it.

On his blog Acro.net, he details the negotiation process and how he’s thankful he didn’t sell the domain earlier. He listed the domain with a $6,000 reserve at a TRAFFIC auction, but the domain didn’t sell. Then he turned down a $10,000 offer:

Right before Christmas, the second inquiry started with a low offer of $2,000 via Sedo and ended at $10,000 with the bidder withdrawing their bid when I asked for more. Now, I am not one who shuns ten grand easily, as it represents a considerable amount of money; after the bidder canceled their round of offers I had that clutching feeling in my stomach thinking, “Did I just throw $10,000 in the garbage?”

By working with Sedo, he was able to get the buyer to place another bid. After a bit of negotiation they settled on the $25,500 number. The domain is still in Sedo’s hands so the buyer’s name isn’t in the whois database yet.
